It's turned out to be a great month!

On the last post, I mentioned the time spent with my wife and son at Humboldt State University for the purpose of his college orientation. Afterwards, the three of us drove north on hwy 101 along the California and Oregon coastlines. The scenery was beautiful but I must admit the somewhat windy roads took some getting used to. At day's end we ended up in Tillamook, Oregon and bedded down for the night. Being at a hotel right in the middle of dairy pastures made for an interesting "ambience".

The next day we headed to the Tillamook Cheese Factory which is a must see for any cheese lover. The ice cream there is excellent and the place also has a wide selection of gift items. We later headed to the Tillamook Air Museum (also a must see) where a large number of vintage military as well as civilian aircraft are available for viewing. Our ultimate destination was Salem, Oregon where we went to visit my nephew and I got to meet his wife and their baby daughter for the first time.

Upon return to California, we rested for a day and then got ready to go to Lake Tahoe to watch my son play in a lacrosse tournament. The scenery is gorgeous and I could see why so many people go there. We were a bit surprised to find that the hotel (Tahoe Biltmore) did not have air conditioning but I had to remind myself that the place is primarily a winter resort area. All in all things went very well and now the family is back in Sacramento. It was good to see Evan having a great time playing with his teammates and they placed 2nd overall.

I am spending the remaining vacation time at home working on my business. It seems I have been having to learn a few things the hard way but for me experience seems to be the best teacher. We have some family friends who will be staying with us for this evening so it will be nice to be able to visit. Next month it will be off to Humboldt State once again to get Evan moved into the dorms.

It's nice to spend time with family

My son's orientation at Humboldt State University concluded today. We had just spent the last two days attending various presentations concerning a wide variety of subjects that we as parents would be dealing with while our son was getting aclimated to his new life as a college student. He spent the last two nights in the dormitory while my wife and I opted for more spacious accomodation at a nearby hotel. Overall, things went pretty well and my son was able to get through the registration process without much difficulty. The three of us learned quite a bit ( my wife was doing most of the listening ) and we even got in a fair amount of exercise due to walking all over the campus.

For now, the three of us are in a hotel room getting ready to venture north to Oregon tomorrow. What was especially nice was that we got to spend time together talking about a wide variety of things and we were not hampered by our regular work schedules. It was a good time to get caught up on things. After the days affairs were concluded, we drove out to a local landmark restaurant and enjoyed a nice dinner. My son enjoyed the majority of the attention focus due to his upcoming college career being in the forefront of discussion. Next month we will get him moved into the dormitory that he will call home for his freshman year. It will be an adjustment as a parent not having him home but I am confident that everything will work out. Things usually do.

So if as a family you find yourself not too sure what each of the other family members are doing, slow down and take some time out for one another. You will be glad you did!
